Cure Yourself Neglect

Many individuals neglect themselves daily by putting other people's needs before their own. However, it is very important to pay attention to your own needs as well, since this affects both your physical and mental health. You may wonder, what is self-care? Self-care is the process of paying attention to one's own needs to ensure they are being met and taken care of properly. It is through different behaviours, that the individual should be actively engaged in managing their own health, welfare, maintenance and protection to prevent themselves from becoming ill. Self-care can be exercising, eating food, going for a walk, drinking water, taking a shower or bath to practice good hygiene, having a cup of tea, sitting in the sun, etc. the list goes on, but these are things that all help you focus on paying attention to your overall health. There are many different forms of self-care that exist, but it all comes down to making the right decisions about the food, exercise, sleep, etc. you need.

Did you know indulging in self-care has proven to be better for your own health? Yep! It's been proven that committing to your own self-care can improve your health in the following ways:

  1. Physical Health Improvements: Looking after your physical health needs can improve your body's appearance, mood and attitude as you are becoming more attuned to what it needs.

  2. Reduced Stress, Anxiety & Depression: Making time for yourself allows you to get your mind off things and allow you the time needed to relax. Any activity that makes you feel more relaxed can help reduce the symptoms or signs of stress, anxiety or depression as your mood is much more positive.

  3. Boosts Self-Esteem: By focusing on the way you see yourself, it can make you want to take more pride in respecting and treating yourself properly. With a higher self-esteem, you are able to handle problems better and achieve goals for self-improvement.

  4. Stronger Mental Health: Prioritising yourself first will allow you to better recognize mental health issues you may be struggling with and will allow you to pay more attention to them by monitoring it better. This can help you detect and prevent the problem from getting worse. Please, note self-care is not a substitute for professional help and you shouldn't feel alone when trying to handle problems alone. If your mental health is suffering you should always talk to someone. However, if you want to improve your mental health it can start by taking the time for you to care for yourself both mentally and physically.

  5. Stronger Relationships: It's easy to place someone else's needs above your own, but you should look after your own needs too through self-care. Self-care can allow you to improve your mood and attitude to be more happier and positive, which can strengthen any interpersonal relationships.

It can be very easy to forget to put yourself first, especially if you have a busy life with multiple responsibilities and other people you need to care for. However, looking after yourself now will make you feel more energetic, happier and healthier in all areas of your life - from work to home. Self-care is not selfish and it does not involve a huge time commitment or expense. It is simply focusing on putting yourself first, even if it's for a while on doing the same day-to-day activities that should focus on working and promoting your own health.
